Texas football got their first win of the 2020 season, not due to many contributions from junior DB B.J. Foster, against UTEP on Sep. 12.

A weird 36 hours for junior defensive back B.J. Foster and the Texas football program after knocking off the UTEP Miners in the season opening win at home on Sep. 12 ended just after it started. Foster had apparently announced he would be quitting the team in the third quarter after being unhappy with his lack of playing time against the Miners.

In the opening week for the Longhorns, Foster only saw eight snaps. And he didn’t rack up any actual stat line, which is very unusual by his standard. Foster was one of the more productive returning defensive backs for Texas this fall, but wasn’t given a big role in the opener.

But Foster quitting the team in the midst of the win over UTEP apparently didn’t do much to keep him away from the team for the rest of the weekend. He was reportedly (per Twitter timeline of Chip Brown of Horns247 on Sep. 13) back with the team for workouts on Sunday afternoon.

It now sounds like Foster is back with the team soon after declaring that he would quit the team in the middle of a season opening game. Foster was part of a pretty volatile situation this weekend, but it looks like it ended just as soon as it began.

This isn’t the first time that a defensive player for the Longhorns said they were leaving the program and returned not too long thereafter. That also happened over the offseason with junior linebacker Juwan Mitchell, redshirt freshman defensive end Myron Warren, and junior defensive back Anthony Cook.

Foster registered 81 total tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, five sacks, two interceptions, six pass deflections, and two forced fumbles. He is also one of the most highly touted recruits in recent memory for head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns.

Texas got the win over UTEP by the final score of 59-3. They had a commanding 45-3 lead at halftime, largely led by the efforts of senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger who had more than 400 passing yards and five touchdowns. But Foster was not an integral part of that season opening win.
