2) Possible Texas basketball last-minute transfer additions: JJ Caldwell

It’s hard to believe that no one has scooped up the former New Mexico Lobos 6-foot-1 and 185 pound rising redshirt junior point guard JJ Caldwell out of the portal as of yet. The fortunes for Caldwell since beginning his college career more than three years ago have not been great yet.

Starting out his college career with the Longhorns in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies basketball program, Caldwell looked to have a really promising run ahead in the SEC. But he only lasted one season in College Station before picking up and taking his talents to join the Lobos for another season.

Caldwell was originally a top 75 ranked high school prospect in the nation as a talented four-star point guard product hailing out of the Cypress Woods basketball program. He played in 13 games during the 2019-20 season, in his lone campaign with the Lobos in the Mountain West Conference (all of which he started in).

In those 13 games that he played in, Caldwell averaged 5.8 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 2.2 steals, and 0.2 blocks. He shot 47.3 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from beyond the arc, and 75.9 percent from the free-throw line. Injuries have held Caldwell back before, but he is a great niche player for a team like the Longhorns to have coming off the bench in their second unit.
