Texas Football: Ehlinger still behind D’Eriq King, Rattler in Heisman odds
The latest versions of Heisman odds heading into the bye week for Texas football still haven’t bumped up Sam Ehlinger all that far.
The post-Week 2 Heisman odds in the 2020 college football season released from various odds makers early this week. And the Texas football program has their star quarterback usually at or near the forefront of such odds lists after a lot of hype heading into the 2020 season, and a big season opening performance from last weekend.
Star senior Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger managed more than 420 passing yards and five passing touchdowns, with no interceptions, in the first half alone in his team’s win on Sep. 12 over the UTEP Miners. Ehlinger and the Longhorns thoroughly dominated the Miners from the get go at home on Saturday night, to the tune of a 59-3 victory.
After his tremendous Week 1 showing, where he posted some really impressive numbers, Ehlinger still remains behind the likes of Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler and Miami transfer quarterback D’Eriq King. In the latest version of the Heisman odds list from Sportsline, heading into Week 3 of the college football season, Ehlinger was fourth in line among the favorites to win the award.
Ehlinger was just ahead of of former USC Trojans transfer and Georgia quarterback JT Daniels, but behind the former Houston Cougar King. After knocking off the UAB Blazers at home in their season opener, King saw his odds bumped up just a bit. But King’s stat line wasn’t near as good as Ehlinger’s.
King wrapped up that Miami win over UAB with 141 passing yards, one passing touchdown, no interceptions, 83 rushing yards, and one rushing touchdown.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma’s stud freshman signal caller Rattler did have a big season opening win. But it came over the FCS Missouri State Bears at home, which doesn’t say much to the difficulty of the opposition. Rattler still amassed 290 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, no interceptions, a nearly perfect passer efficiency rating over 300, and more than 20 adjusted yards per passing attempt.
Rattler is second in line for this week’s Heisman odds from Sportsline, just behind Clemson’s star junior quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Clemson knocked off the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in their season opener, partly thanks to a very efficient day from Lawrence.
Ehlinger and the Longhorns will get another shot to prove both his Heisman contender status and their College Football Playoff contender status on the road on Sep. 26 in the Big 12 opener. Texas travels to Lubbock to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Sep. 26.
