The 2021 Texas football recruiting class is losing out on the race to land a commitment from 4-Star Loyola CB/ATH Ceyair Wright.

Fortunes on the trail for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class were mixed up to this point, and mostly throughout the 2020 offseason too. Head coach Tom Herman is hoping to round out this recruiting cycle in style, ahead of the Early Signing Period, which is roughly three months away. He’s got a decent class in store, but still has a few needs to add to before the Early Signing Period arrives in mid-December (that is if it isn’t pushed back due to circumstances surrounding the novel coronavirus pandemic).

A position that looked like it was of need earlier in this cycle, but isn’t really any longer, is at defensive back. Texas did well to land a few defensive back commits in the 2021 class, but there’s still a few key targets remaining uncommitted, namely four-star safety Andrew Mukuba.

However, one defensive back target that sits among the highest rated uncommitted prospects for this cycle that has a Texas offer is four-star Loyola cornerback/athlete Ceyair Wright. The ultra-talented 6-foot-1 and 175 pound California native holds offers from nearly three dozen schools as of the afternoon of Sep. 19. And a lot of the interest coming his way is obviously from PAC-12 schools.

The highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the USC Trojans, Arizona State Sun Devils, Michigan Wolverines, Oregon Ducks, Stanford Cardinal, Baylor Bears, Florida State Seminoles, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners, Ole Miss Rebels, Penn State Nittany Lions, Tennessee Volunteers, and Texas Tech Red Raiders. But most of the schools that he’s apparently narrowing his decision down to are out of the PAC-12.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions have Wright trending to land with head coach Clay Helton and the USC football program. The Rivals FutureCast also has all of their analysts and publishers picking Wright to commit to USC over the rest of the competing schools.

Wright ranks as the nation’s No. 71 2021 high school prospect, No. 5 cornerback, and No. 7 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him just inside the top 70 high school prospects in the nation for this cycle.

Losing out on the commitment of Wright wouldn’t hurt the Longhorns all that much since there wasn’t much traction between the two parties for a while. Texas can still stack depth in the defensive backfield in this class.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 15 in the nation, and holds steady in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. Meanwhile, USC’s 2021 class ranks at No. 10 in the nation and in the second spot in the PAC-12 behind Oregon.
