Former Texas football CB Quandre Diggs ejected vs. Patriots
Former Texas football DB Quandre Diggs had a bad hit on Patriots wide receiver N’Keal Harry in the Seahawks SNF matchup with the Patriots.
A former star cornerback out of the Texas football program, Quandre Diggs currently of the Seattle Seahawks, had a dangerous hit on Sunday Night Football in a matchup at home against the New England Patriots. The former Detroit Lions cornerback Diggs was playing in just his second game in a Seahawks uniform before he was ejected from the matchup against the Patriots this weekend.
Diggs had quite the start to his run with the Seahawks with an interception in his first game with Seattle, and an ejection late in the first quarter in his second appearance. He was on the field likely for less than 20 percent of the snaps against Cam Newton and the Patriots than he was in the Seahawks Week 1 win over the Atlanta Falcons on the road. Diggs got 77 defensive snaps in against the Falcons.
The particular hit that got Diggs in trouble against the Patriots was on a fourth down play, where Newton hit former Arizona State Sun Devils wide receiver N’Keal Harry on an intermediate route that got a first down. It was impressive that Harry hung onto the ball after such a jarring hit from Diggs.
Although Diggs wasn’t directly called for targeting on this hit, he was ejected on a personal foul after it was reviewed by the league office. And this call makes sense since it was head-to-head contact, which is really what the NFL is trying to get rid of in games now.
The hit did not help the case of the Seahawks new-look defense (now featuring both Diggs and former New York Jets safety Jamal Adams in the secondary) as the Patriots would drive down and score just a few minutes later. Diggs will now be out for the rest of the game, and we’ll see what happens with this case moving forward.
Diggs is in the midst of his sixth season in the NFL. He landed with the Seahawks last season, and played five games in Seattle and Detroit each. He’s got 10 career interceptions (two taken back for touchdowns), 55 passes defended, 260 combined tackles, and 12.0 tackles for loss between his time with the Seahawks and Lions.
The Seahawks and Patriots are both 1-0, trying to continue their winning streaks to round out this Sunday action in the NFL. Diggs will not play a part, though, in the Seahawks efforts in the last three quarters to try and down the Patriots.
