Former Texas football redshirt senior quarterback Shane Buechele had a huge day in a win for the SMU Mustangs over the North Texas Mean Green.

The SMU Mustangs got a really nice quarterback haul out of the NCAA Transfer Portal more than one year ago when they landed former Texas football four-star recruit and then junior Shane Buechele to plug a need at the position. Buechele has since gone on to lead the SMU football program to their first double-digit win season since the 1980’s, American Athletic Conference Championship contention, and has registered some impressive offensive numbers in the process.

While Buechele and the Mustangs got off to a pretty slow start in their season opener two weekends ago against the Texas State Bobcats and head coach Jake Spavital on the road, they really got off and running in their second game of the 2020 season. SMU took on the North Texas Mean Green out of Conference-USA in their second game of the year on Sep. 19.

SMU took down the Mean Green by the final score of 65-35 on Saturday evening. And North Texas was an underdog by just 14.5 points coming into this game. SMU really took hold of the game from the get go. By the end of the first quarter, Buechele and the Mustangs already had a 21-0 lead. They stretched that lead to 34-7 heading into the locker room at halftime.

Buechele himself had a fantastic day putting up more than 60 points in Denton. He completed 24 of his 33 passing attempts for 344 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, run rushing touchdown, and no interception. It was a near flawless game for the redshirt senior. There were quite a few impressive plays that Buechele put together against this struggling North Texas defense too.

SMU stretched their record to 2-0 on the season after taking down North Texas this weekend. This game should also help the case for Buechele to get national honors coming out of the weekend, and push up his stock for the 2021 NFL Draft (if he leaves SMU following the 2020 season).

Buechele managed more than 370 total yards from scrimmage in this game and didn’t turn the ball over a single time. This was also one of just three career games where he registered a passer efficiency rating better than 200.0 and one of now a dozen games with a completion percentage over 70.

Next up for Buechele and his SMU squad is a the FCS Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in their home opener on Sep. 26. They open up AAC play on Oct. 3 at home against the Memphis Tigers.

Meanwhile, Texas opened up their season with a home win over the UTEP Miners by the final score of 59-3. Next up for the Longhorns is the Big 12 opener on the road on Sep. 26 against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
