Who should be a focal point this weekend against Texas Tech for the Texas football program among players who could breakout in Big 12 play?

The Big 12 opener looms large for the Texas football program this coming weekend. Head coach Tom Herman is getting his group ready to take on head coach Matt Wells and the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road in Lubbock, with a mid-afternoon kick off slated for Sep. 26. Texas can extend their winning streak over Texas Tech to three games this weekend if they take care of business to open up conference play.

In their season opener at home back on Sep. 12, the Longhorns dismantled the UTEP Miners out of Conference-USA by the final score of 59-3. Senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger had a sensational first half, with more than 420 passing yards, five touchdowns, and no picks. Ehlinger guided Texas to take a commanding 45-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.

But the first real test for the Longhorns surfaces this weekend against Texas Tech. While the Red Raiders didn’t look great in their season opener against FCS Houston Baptist back on Sep. 12, they will surely be looking to pull off a big upset against Texas. This is a great opportunity for Wells to see his squad bounce back in a big way.

Texas needs a big effort from both sides of the ball to beat Tech for the third straight year. Who exactly will need to step up in the spotlight for them to move to 2-0 on the season?

Here’s a look at the three players that could breakout for the Longhorns in the Big 12 opener on Sep. 26 against Texas Tech.
