Head coach Tom Herman had the Week 2 depth chart released for Texas football heading into their Big 12 opener vs. Texas Tech.

The Week 2 depth chart is out for the Texas football program, and it looks pretty similar for the Big 12 opener compared to how it played out in the season opener back on Sep. 12 against the UTEP Miners. Texas had a big season opening win over the Miners at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium about 10 days ago. They topped UTEP by a gigantic 56-point margin.

The Big 12 opener this coming weekend should present a much bigger challenge for the Longhorns, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Texas takes on the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road in Lubbock on Sep. 26 to open up their Big 12 schedule.

Texas’ secondary might be facing the biggest uptick in difficulty in Week 2 compared to the season opener. Texas Tech does have a plethora of skill position weapons, led by standout redshirt sophomore quarterback Alan Bowman and redshirt senior wide receiver TJ Vasher. This will be a good test for the likes of defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash and his group this weekend.

Ash and head coach Tom Herman appear to have a good idea of how they want to shape the secondary this year, though, against high-powered passing offenses like that of Texas Tech. Texas is giving the start at the SPUR position in the secondary to the 6-foot-1 and 215 pound sophomore Chris Adimora over junior Anthony Cook.

Adimora did take most of the snaps at this spot in the secondary in the season opener against UTEP, registering six total tackles in the process. Meanwhile, Cook took a good amount of snaps at defensive back too. He registered two tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss in the Longhorns season opening win.

Expect to see both Adimora and Cook take a good number of snaps in the Texas secondary each way this weekend against the Red Raiders. If Texas can stifle the Texas Tech passing game on Sep. 26, then there is reason for concern for head coach Matt Wells as his offense struggled in their opener 10 days ago against FCS Houston Baptist.

Texas kicks off against Texas Tech in the mid-afternoon slate at Jones AT&T Stadium at 2:30 p.m. CT. They are a two-possession favorite on the road, but can’t look past what should be an upset-minded Texas Tech team.
