Texas football has a potentially difficult and underrated matchup on tap in the Big 12 opener this weekend when they take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The first major test of the 2020 regular season is about to arrive for the Texas football program this coming weekend. Head coach Tom Herman and his squad are gearing up to take on head coach Matt Wells and his Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road to open up Big 12 play on Sep. 26 in Lubbock. Texas gets the mid-afternoon slate against Texas Tech this weekend, with kick off set for 2:30 p.m. CT at Jones AT&T Stadium.

The Longhorns took care of business in their season opener, knocking off the UTEP Miners at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (out of Conference-USA) by the final score of 59-3. Texas came into the game as more than a 40-point favorite, but the 56-point dismantling of UTEP wasn’t what was anticipated to open up the 2020 campaign.

Against Texas Tech, the Longhorns are a three-possession favorite, more specifically holding the betting line by 18-points as of the evening of Sep. 24. And the ESPN Football Power Index gives Texas a little over a 91 percent chance to take this game on the road.

In their season opener back on Sep. 12, Texas Tech was taken down to the wire by the FCS Houston Baptist Huskies. Even though they came into the game as a heavy favorite, the Red Raiders struggled to pull away from Houston Baptist at any point. Texas Tech wound up coming away with the victory by the final score of 35-33.

Barely beating an FCS team would indicate to most that Texas Tech should be mostly a pushover for Texas. But that is not likely to be the case. Here’s a look into three bold predictions for Texas against upset-minded Texas Tech on Sep. 26.
