Texas Football: Former DE/TE Rob Cummins enters transfer portal
The most recent loss to the NCAA Transfer Portal for the Texas football program is now DE/TE Rob Cummins, who had retired last year.
The latest loss from the Texas football program to the NCAA Transfer Portal (and the first to come in the midst of the 2020 regular season) reportedly is redshirt junior defensive end/tight end Rob Cummins. The former three-star strong-side defensive end recruit and member of the Texas 2017 signing class retired from football due to medical reasons last year. But he appears to be ready to return with another program this fall.
Cummins is likely to go down as a transfer portal prospect in the 2021 class, and potentially be eligible to play wherever he lands next for next season.
Coming out of All Saints Episcopal High School in Fort Worth, TX, in the 2017 recruiting cycle Cummins ranked as the nation’s No.1,463 high school prospect, No. 73 strong-side defensive end, and No. 201 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). He never played in any games in 2018 or 2019 as he was rehabbing from a bunch of lingering lower-body injuries. And he redshirted in his first year on the Forty Acres, back during the 2017 season.
Cummins split his time with the Longhorns playing at defensive end and tight end. But those reps only came in camp as he never got to see a single meaningful snap in his college career to date. He didn’t even get really any snaps on special teams in 2018 or 2019.
While this isn’t a direct loss for the Longhorns, it is noteworthy that a former player is returning and hitting the transfer portal. Texas lost a few players to the transfer portal over the offseason, including offensive tackle JP Urquidez and junior linebacker Caleb Johnson.
Cummins held offers from other schools like the Baylor Bears, Army Black Knights, Air Force Falcons, Houston Cougars, and UCF Knights coming out of high school. Maybe one of those schools will see if they can pick up where they left off after offering him four cycles ago.
