Texas football could have a sneaky difficult matchup on tap for Sam Ehlinger this weekend in the Big 12 opener in Lubbock.

Entering the Big 12 opener, all eyes will fall on senior Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger as his squad takes on the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road on Sep. 26. Texas hits the road to travel to Lubbock this weekend for their first real test of the 2020 season to face standout quarterback Alan Bowman and the Red Raiders. After an impressive season opening win on Sep. 12 over the UTEP Miners under the lights at DKR by the final score of 59-3, Texas can now prove their status as a top 10 team in the country.

Of all the players that Texas could put up for the honors this fall, Ehlinger has by far the best chance to be a Heisman finalist. Ehlinger had Heisman hype going for him last season, but it dwindled as the year moved along since the Longhorns failed to live up to expectations in the Big 12 and in the national picture.

Former USC Trojans quarterback and Fox Sports college football commentator Matt Leinart recently included Ehlinger in the top five of his Heisman candidates heading into Week 4. Leinart placed Ehlinger at No. 4 in the top five of his Heisman list this week.

Ahead of Ehlinger (in order from top-to-bottom) is Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, and Miami quarterback D’Eriq King. The lone quarterback behind Ehlinger on this list was Oklahoma redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler.

Out of the Big 12, Ehlinger and Rattler really have the best odds by far to get the Heisman Trophy this fall. Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy and Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard could definitely be in the running, but they’ll face an uphill battle for various reasons.

Ehlinger finished up the season opener with more than 430 total yards, five passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. And pretty much all of that production came in the first half. Week 1 was record breaking for Ehlinger and the Longhorns offense and we’ll see how they can carry that momentum into the Big 12 opener.
