Texas Football: Sam Ehlinger breaks records in win over Texas Tech
Senior star Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger put up another massive state line in the second game of the season to beat Texas Tech.
One of the most insane and exciting victories in recent memory for the Texas football program took place in Lubbock at Jones AT&T Stadium on the afternoon/evening of Sep. 26. Head coach Tom Herman and his squad took on the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road in the mid-afternoon slate this weekend to open up Big 12 play, and the game definitely didn’t disappoint in terms of entertainment value.
But it almost disappointed a lot of Longhorns fans in terms of play on the field.
Texas really got mixed results throughout the game from the offense. The offensive line, wide receivers, and even star senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger, struggled at different points of this game. Yet, the Longhorns got a big time performance from the offense, more specifically Ehlinger, when it mattered most late in the fourth quarter.
The complete stat line for Ehlinger in the win over Texas Tech was really impressive. For the second straight week, Ehlinger put up numbers that are worthy of national and Big 12 recognition and honors. He registered roughly 350 total yards, six total touchdowns (five passing and one rushing), a completion percentage north of 65.0, and just one interception.
On the season to date, Ehlinger has more than 700 total yards, 11 total touchdowns (10 passing and one rushing), one interception, and a 71.2 completion percentage. And the most important thing is that he’s led the Longhorns to a 2-0 start after the serious upset scare on the road from the Red Raiders.
What Sam Ehlinger did for Texas football vs. Tech
Nonetheless, Ehlinger’s play in the second game of the season broke even more school records. The efforts of Ehlinger to lead the Longhorns back to nab the unbelievable 63-56 win over Texas Tech in overtime itself was the most points this team scored that late in a game since 2007.
Sam managed his 15th career game with both a rushing and passing touchdown, which surpassed former star Texas quarterback Colt McCoy in that category. It is also the most that any Texas quarterback has had in the last 25 years (even more than Vince Young).
Ehlinger is well on pace to pass the mark of just shy of 3,700 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns that he registered last season. He only continues to get better statistically, and that trend should keep on going for the remainder of the season.
Next up for Ehlinger and the Longhorns is a Week 3 battle with the TCU Horned Frogs at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Oct. 3. TCU lost their de facto season opener and Big 12 opener on Sep. 26 by a narrow three-point margin to the Iowa State Cyclones.
Texas moves to 2-0 (1-0 Big 12) on the season after moving past Texas Tech in a thrilling comeback fashion late in the game this afternoon/evening. What this game also did was push Ehlinger over 100 career total touchdowns. He’s only going to continue to break records for Texas and in the Big 12 from here on out.
