For the second game of the 2020 season for the Texas football program, head coach Tom Herman gets his squad ready to take on the 1-0 Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas Tech downed the FCS Houston Baptist Huskies by a narrow 35-33 margin in their season opener, on Sep. 12 at home at Jones AT&T Stadium.
In their second game of the season, Texas Tech has another contest at home as they look to upset the Longhorns. Texas took care of business in their season opener back on Sep. 12 under the lights at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, in a 59-3 romping of the UTEP Miners out of Conference-USA.
Texas has now won two games in a row in this series against Texas Tech, looking to make it three straight today. The last time the Red Raiders beat the Longhorns was in 2017, when former head coach Kliff Kingsbury saw his squad get the upset of a freshman Sam Ehlinger at the time.
Entering this game, Texas is a three possession favorite. ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Texas more than a 91 percent chance to beat head coach Matt Wells and Texas Tech on the road this weekend.

Injured Texas football players
The biggest injury news for the Longhorns in this game involves sophomore wide receiver Jake Smith, who is out for a different reason than why he missed the season opener against UTEP. Smith is reportedly out with a non-COVID-19 related illness, not because of the hamstring injury from two weeks ago.
More significant injury news came with the successful surgery earlier this week with redshirt freshman wide receiver Jordan Whittington. In the first half of the season opener, Texas saw Whittington come up limping with what would be diagnosed as a small tear in his meniscus.
Picking Texas football vs. UTEP
The Longhorns are heavy favorites in this game, despite Texas Tech bringing back a decent team (especially on offense). Texas will have to do their best to shut down the trio that is redshirt sophomore quarterback Alan Bowman, redshirt sophomore running back SaRodorick Thompson, and redshirt senior wide receiver TJ Vasher.
Texas Tech is strong at the skill positions, but the Longhorns can take advantage of a suspect pass defense. They allowed a whopping 572 passing yards and four touchdowns in their season opener against Houston Baptist. Meanwhile, Ehlinger registered more than 420 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, and no interceptions in the first half alone two weeks ago against the Miners.
