Big 12 Football prospects for the 2021 NFL Draft

5. Trevon Moehrig, TCU S

A rather poor start to the 2020 season for the defense of head coach Gary Patterson and the TCU Horned Frogs shouldn’t do much to hurt the draft stock of junior standout safety Trevon Moehrig. The sizable 6-foot-2 and 205 pound Horned Frogs defensive back got mixed results out of his first action of the 2020 season, in a loss to Iowa State by a narrow three-point margin.

Moehrig registered six total tackles in the loss to Iowa State over the weekend. Although he was a sure-tackler in the loss to the Clones on Sep. 26, Moehrig gave up an 11-yard catch the only time he was targeted in pass coverage. Overall, it was a pretty pedestrian season opener for Moehrig. He should still be considered a top five prospect out of the Big 12 in this 2021 NFL Draft class heading into Week 5.

Projected draft round: 3-5

4. Caden Sterns, Texas S

Similar to that of Moehrig, talented junior Texas safety Caden Sterns had a rather pedestrian start to his 2020 campaign. Both junior safeties are likely to be third round picks at the very latest in the 2021 NFL Draft, but they need to show out more as the season moves along.

Statistically, Sterns is off to a solid start. He’s registered eight total tackles (four total and four assisted), 0.5 tackles for loss, one interception, and two pass deflections. That pick was Sterns’ first since his true freshman campaign.

The downside to Sterns’ play in the Longhorns Week 4 win over Texas Tech on the road was the fact that he had two missed tackles on seven total tries. That was good for one of the lowest tackling grades of Sterns’ career to date. But he was targeted twice, and only gave up one completion for 12 yards.

Projected draft round: 2-4
