Texas Football: 3 reasons Sam Ehlinger is better than Spencer Rattler
3) Why Texas football QB Sam Ehlinger is better than Spencer Rattler: Hot start to the 2020 season
There’s no doubt in my mind that Ehlinger’s start to the 2020 season trumps Rattler’s in almost every sense. The Longhorns are still undefeated whereas the Sooners were almost bounced from the AP Poll, and could be if they slip up again in the near future. A bevy of turnovers led Rattler to doom the Sooners in clutch time, which could be a potentially worrying sign down the road.
Through two games played this season, Ehlinger has registered a 71.2 completion percentage, 688 passing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, just one interception, 11.5 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a sparkling 192.9 passer efficiency rating.
Meanwhile, Rattler registered a stellar 75.9 completion percentage, 677 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, three interceptions, 12.1 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 209.1 passer efficiency rating. But a lot of those numbers Rattler put up against the FCS Missouri State Bears at home in Oklahoma’s season opener.
While both quarterbacks are putting up some pretty impressive numbers so far, you have to take the season opener’s with a grain of salt. You would have to consider the UTEP Miners a slightly more difficult opponent than Missouri State, but the margin is not all that great.
What does stick out from each of their stat lines is the consistency for which Ehlinger has played in the first two weeks of the season. He has 11 total touchdowns and more than 720 total yards. That does trump Rattler, and if Ehlinger can keep up that level of play he will be a Heisman finalist this year.
