Although an undefeated record and top 10 ranking sounds great for Texas football through the first two games of the season, there are flaws worth noting.

The first real test for the Texas football program arrived on the afternoon of Sep. 26, on the road against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. In Texas’ Big 12 opener on the road in Lubbock last weekend, Texas Tech unexpectedly took them to the brink. At one point against Texas Tech, it looked like Texas was going to take firm control of the game. But momentum never completely swung in Texas’ favor until the dying minutes of the fourth quarter.

A 22-point run in the last roughly three minutes of the fourth quarter and at the beginning of overtime pushed the Longhorns to nab the wild 63-56 comeback victory in their Big 12 opener over the Red Raiders.

While it was good to see head coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns escape Lubbock with a win and begin the path to firmly entrenching themselves atop the Big 12 standings, this team surely has a long way to go. They showed plenty of flaws on each side of the ball at different points in the win over Texas Tech.

The defense especially came under a lot of heat since the weekend for giving up 56 points to a Texas Tech team that couldn’t even pull away from the FCS Houston Baptist Huskies in their season opener. At least the coaching staff now has a long list of points to improve upon heading into their Big 12 home opener, which kicks off on Oct. 3 against the TCU Horned Frogs at 11 a.m. CT.

Here’s a look into three things that are missing for the Longhorns this year that they need to be successful in the Big 12 for the rest of the season.
