4-Star Texas basketball G target D’Marco Dunn commits to UNC Tar Heels
One of the more highly touted offers that the 2021 Texas basketball recruiting class sent out, 4-Star SG D’Marco Dunn, committed to UNC on Sep. 30.
What would seem like a sizable hit to the 2021 Texas basketball recruiting class, by missing out on four-star guard target D’Marco Dunn, actually won’t be all that bad. This talented shooting guard product from Westover High School in Fayetteville, NC, wound up staying in-state and gave his commitment to head coach Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels over offers from the likes of Texas head coach Shaka Smart and the Vanderbilt Commodores, among others.
Prior to committing to the Tar Heels on the afternoon of Sep. 30, Dunn held offers from just shy of 20 schools. The highlighting schools of his impressive offer sheet included the Arizona Wildcats, Clemson Tigers, Houston Cougars, Louisville Cardinals, Marquette Golden Eagles, Maryland Terrapins, VCU Rams, Wichita State Shockers, Wake Forest Demon Deacons, and Xavier Musketeers.
Texas was actually the most recent school to send a scholarship offer Dunn’s way before he committed to UNC. Dunn’s Texas offer was received back on Aug. 1.
Moreover, Dunn ranks as the nation’s No. 79 2021 high school prospect, No. 16 shooting guard, and No. 2 prospect out of North Carolina (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 slots him as the nation’s No. 88 high school prospect, No. 19 shooting guard, and No. 3 prospect out of North Carolina.
It looked like the commitment decision for Dunn had ultimately come down to the Tar Heels and Commodores. Other competing schools that got in on his recruitment late like Arizona and Texas appeared to be in the mix among maybe four or five finalists, but they didn’t do as much to win over the interests of Dunn as UNC and Vandy did.

The commitment of Dunn to play for the Tar Heels came via his Twitter timeline on Wednesday afternoon. He is the second commit in UNC’s 2021 recruiting class, with the first coming from four-star Kinston power forward Dontrez Styles.
In the 2021 Texas recruiting class, Smart has four commits. The highest rated of the bunch is highly touted four-star Assumption combo guard Emarion Ellis. Four-star IMG Academy shooting guard Tamar Bates and Ellis give the Longhorns two nice added boosts to the backcourt rotation from this 2021 class.
There’s not much of a cause for concern that the Longhorns didn’t land a commitment from Dun in their 2021 class. Since they already have four commits in this class, they might be best served to use one of the last scholarships to fill another positional need.
