The 2021 Texas football recruiting class appears to be losing ground with four-star LBJ safety Andrew Mukuba ahead of his decision date.

One of the top remaining targets for head coach Tom Herman and defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash to get in the 2021 Texas football recruiting class ahead of the Early Signing Period is the hometown four-star LBJ safety Andrew Mukuba. This 6-foot and 185 pound defensive back product hailing out of Austin, TX, is one of the most highly touted remaining uncommitted high school prospects for Texas ahead of the Early Signing Period.

And Mukuba is set to make an Oct. 1 announcement for his commitment. He really appears to be narrowing down his decision to just about two or three schools at this point. The two that definitely appear to stick out to land his pledge are the Longhorns and Clemson Tigers. The LSU Tigers also don’t appear to be completely out of the running, but are facing an uphill battle.

If Mukuba was to commit to LSU, it would be a surprise to a lot of people.

Head coach Dabo Swinney and his Clemson coaching staff seem to be making a big priority out of getting Mukuba into their 2021 class. Clemson doesn’t usually dig into this region of the country on the recruiting trail, as they have less than three players from Texas on their current roster, but Mukuba sticks out to them.

Combine that will the Longhorns already having multiple commits that could wind up playing at the safety position and you get a situation where Clemson is a good contender to steal Mukuba away from the Forty Acres.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions (as of the afternoon of Sep. 30) does have Clemson trending over the likes of the Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, LSU, and Alabama Crimson Tide, among others, to land the commitment of Mukuba over the rest of the field. The Rivals FutureCast also has all of their analysts and publishers picking him to commit to Clemson over the rest of the competition.

Mukuba ranks as the nation’s No. 242 2021 high school prospect, No. 13 safety, and No. 43 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 slots him as the nation’s No. 212 high school prospect, No. 14 safety, and 36 prospect out of Texas.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 15 in the nation and remains in the second spot behind Oklahoma in the Big 12. They currently hold 18 commits in their 2021 class.

There was a point recently at which it looked like the Longhorns could be a lock to get the commitment of Mukuba in their 2021 recruiting class. But that has since faded given the level of priority for which Clemson’s coaching staff has given him in recent months.

If Mukuba does wind up giving his pledge to Clemson, he would be the 17th commit in their 2021 class. Clemson currently has the nation’s No. 5 2021 recruiting class and the best in the ACC ahead of the Miami Hurricanes.
