Entering a crucial Week 3 matchup for the Texas football program this weekend, they have to stave off the upset bid of the TCU Horned Frogs at home.

Heading into the Big 12 home opener this coming weekend against the TCU Horned Frogs, the Texas football program will be hoping to get a more solidified win than they had the previous week. Texas does carry a record of 2-0 (1-0 Big 12) into this Oct. 3 showdown against TCU (11 a.m. CT kick off), but they barely slid by last weekend on the road.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders pushed the Longhorns to the brink back on Sep. 26 in the Big 12 opener for head coach Tom Herman. Texas came in as a three possession favorite over Texas Tech on the road in Lubbock. And it looked like at different points of the game that they would be able to take control and run away with the lead.

But it wound up that the Longhorns let Texas Tech hang around for all too long. Head coach Matt Wells saw his squad make a big run of their own to seemingly take control of the game late in the fourth quarter. Texas was down by a sizable 15-point margin with less than four minutes to go.

Senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger never wavered and guided Texas back to get 15 points in roughly less than two minutes to push the game into overtime. There was also an unlikely onside kick recovery involved in that crazy couple of minutes. And the lone touchdown of overtime went to the Longhorns, which gave them the 63-56 comeback win in the end.

In their de facto season opener, the Horned Frogs were downed by the Iowa State Cyclones by the final score of 37-34. TCU heads into this game still not having played a single non-conference contest. They couldn’t get their planned season opener in back on Sep. 11 against the SMU Mustangs due to novel coronavirus related issues.

Nonetheless, TCU has always been a stingy opponent for the Longhorns since joining the Big 12 roughly 10 years ago. They upset Texas in Fort Worth by a double-digit margin last year. Here’s a look into three reasons why TCU could pull off the upset of the Longhorns for the second straight season.
