2) Why TCU could upset Texas football: Special teams mishaps

While non of the special teams mishaps in the win over Texas Tech were necessarily the fault of junior kicker Cameron Dicker, all other phases of this unit for the Longhorns were a pretty big mess. Dicker was pretty good for the Longhorns to start the season. He’s made 3-of-4 field goal attempts and all 15 of his extra-point tries.

There was also that amazing onside kick recovery that Texas got thanks to a weird bounce off the tee from Dicker.

The major problem for the special teams unit last week was primarily mishaps in the punting game. Both the return unit and the punt blockers had issues last week against Texas Tech. One of the punts off the leg of junior punter Ryan Bucjevski was blocked and returned for a touchdown by the Red Raiders. And then Jamison bobbled a punt return and Tech wound up recovering in the end zone for another score.

Texas Tech also got an onside kick recovery of their own that caught the Longhorns by surprise. If not for Bowman tossing a pick a few plays later, that onside kick recovery that Texas let up could’ve cost them the game in the end.

All of these special teams mishaps that occurred against Texas Tech don’t tend to bode well against a team like TCU that rarely makes mistakes in this phase of the game. Special teams does have the ability to cost the Longhorns some wins, and they can’t let this game get away from them because they can’t get this unit together.
