Texas Football: 3 reasons why TCU will upset the Longhorns
1) Why TCU could upset Texas football: Max Duggan and Taye Barber
The way that Patterson and the Horned Frogs are able to creatively utilize some of their more agile skill position threats and some talented dual-threat quarterbacks is really impressive. And the next scary quarterback-wide receiver connection for the Horned Frogs seems to be sophomore signal caller Max Duggan and junior wide receiver Taye Barber.
There’s just something about those short but speedy skill position weapons that the Horned Frogs usually have that make their offense so difficult to prepare for. This year, that elusive skill position weapon is the 5-foot-9 and 185 pound wideout Barber.
In TCU’s loss to Iowa State last weekend, Barber registered just under 100 total yards from scrimmage and one touchdown. Of his 93 total yards, 82 were receiving on five catches. And his lone touchdown was a reception. Barber had a good game against the Longhorns last year too, where he registered nine catches for 94 yards.
And that was when TCU still had Jalen Reagor in their receiving corps.
Texas needs to be ready to shut down both Duggan and Barber. Duggan is an underrated dual-threat quarterback that doesn’t get enough respect for how he uses his legs as a weapon.
Duggan had split time in the Horned Frogs de factor season opener against the Clones. In splitting time with former Georgia transfer quarterback Matthew Downing last week, Duggan completed 16-of-19 passing attempts for 241 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and one interception. In TCU’s win over Texas last year, Duggan was very good with just shy of 350 total yards, three total touchdowns, and one interception.
They have to be ready for the underrated threat that this TCU offense can bring to the table this weekend. Realistically Ehlinger should be able to keep pace with TCU, but he has to manage the turnovers better this year than he did last.
