Texas Football: PFF completely snubs Sam Ehlinger from Heisman top 10
Texas football saw their star senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger left off of the latest Heisman top 10 heading out of Week 4 from PFF.
Most Heisman odds list heading into Week 5 of the 2020 college football season at least have Texas football senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger in their top five, if not firmly inside their top 10. But Pro Football Focus isn’t very high on Ehlinger post-Week 4. PFF’s top 10 didn’t even have Ehlinger present heading out of Week 4 of the regular season.
The lone player out of the Big 12 that even made PFF’s top five or 10 for their Heisman watch for this week was Oklahoma Sooners redshirt freshman quarterback and former elite five-star recruit Spencer Rattler. At No. 4 on the list, Rattler didn’t drop much in this PFF Heisman watch despite three interceptions in Oklahoma’s upset loss at home last weekend in their Big 12 opener at the hands of the Kansas State Wildcats.
PFF is still taking stock out on the longevity of this Oklahoma offense and the raw arm talent that Rattler brings to the table for head coach Lincoln Riley.
And to round out the top three, PFF had (in order from top-to-bottom) Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, and Miami quarterback D’Eriq King.
Even the likes of Group of Five players like UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel and SMU breakout running back Ulysses Bentley got nods in some form on this list from PFF. Leaving Ehlinger off doesn’t mean much over the long haul for his Heisman chances, as long as the Longhorns stay in the hunt for a Big 12 Title and to represent the conference in the College Football Playoff.
What’s wrong with leaving Texas football QB Sam Ehlinger off the list
It is still a travesty that Sam was left off this list entirely.
In roughly six and a half quarters of game time thus far for Ehlinger, he’s registered more than 700 total yards, 11 total touchdowns (10 passing, one rushing), one interception, and a career-best passer efficiency rating above 190.0. He’s also completing more than 71.0 percent of his passing attempts thus far.
The way that Ehlinger led the Longhorns back to beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road in their Big 12 opener last weekend was nothing short of mind blowing. He deserves more props for coming through in clutch time and largely saving Texas’ chances to contend for a Big 12 Title and a spot in the Playoff early in the season.
Ehlinger was also great for the Longhorns in their season opening win at home back on Sep. 12 over the UTEP Miners, by the commanding final score of 59-3. He had more than 400 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, and no picks in a record-breaking first half for the Texas offense. Texas put up 45 points in the first half alone against the Miners more than two weeks ago.
There will be another sneaky difficult test for Ehlinger and the Longhorns on tap for Week 3 on their schedule. In their Big 12 home opener, Texas takes on head coach Gary Patterson and the TCU Horned Frogs on Oct. 3 at DKR. Kick off is set for 11 a.m. CT between Texas and TCU. The Horned Frogs come in with a record of 0-1 (0-1 Big 12), while the Longhorns own a record of 2-0 (1-0 Big 12).
