Texas Football: 3 problematic Horned Frogs for the Longhorns
2) Problematic Horned Frogs for Texas football: JD Spielman
In what will be the first matchup for senior former Nebraska Cornhuskers grad transfer wide receiver JD Spielman against the Longhorns, defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash can’t overlook the threat that he poses. As one of the most experienced and reliable receivers on this Horned Frogs roster, Spielman is a breakthrough waiting to happen.
Nebraska is a former big-time Big 12 foe of the Longhorns, but Spielman arrived in Lincoln well after the Huskers bolted for the Big Ten West. Nebraska joined the Big Ten in the early 2010’s, and Spielman largely still played well in his three years with the program before transferring to join the TCU football program.
Although he didn’t make a huge impact in the Horned Frogs season opening loss to Iowa State, Spielman can’t be forgotten by this Longhorns secondary that struggled last week against Texas Tech. Spielman registered just two catches for 21 receiving yards and no touchdowns in TCU’s 37-34 loss to the Clones.
But what Spielman posted in terms of his career numbers in his first three years playing for Nebraska should catch the eye of the Texas coaching staff. He has 172 career catches for 2,562 receiving yards, and 15 touchdown catches. He also has over 130 rushing yards on 22 attempts from his time with the Huskers.
