Sam Ehlinger right that Texas football ‘deserves better’
Texas football had an absolutely tragic loss at the hands of the TCU Horned Frogs on Oct. 3, and Sam Ehlinger had a lot to say after the game.
It was a truly devastating loss that senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger and the Texas football program experienced at the hands of the stingy TCU Horned Frogs in their Big 12 home opener on Oct. 3. Texas fell short by the final score of 33-31, as a late fumble from junior running back Keaontay Ingram really cost this team in the end.
Head coach Tom Herman sees his Longhorns move to a record of 2-1 (1-1 Big 12) after falling short to the Horned Frogs by a margin of just two points. Texas also fell out of the top 20 in both major polls heading out of Week 5 of the 2020 college football season.
Ehlinger was vocal on this Longhorns loss over the weekend. He claimed that this school and fan base “deserves better”. Here’s more on what he reportedly had to say on this matter following Texas’ loss to TCU on Oct. 3.
"“Losing bothers me the most,” Ehlinger said. “This university deserves better, and it’s very frustrating when it’s self-inflicting and it’s preventable by attention to detail and playing the way we all know that everybody is capable of playing in this program.”"
In this loss to TCU, Ehlinger registered 236 passing yards, just shy of 50 rushing yards, four passing touchdowns, and one interception. But this was his worst game statistically up to this point of the regular season. He didn’t get much help, though, from the rest of this team.
There were two big opportunities that the Longhorns had to get the lead back late in the fourth quarter. Ehlinger hit Ingram on a long pass where the Texas running back was caught from behind just inside the red zone. Ingram then fumbled the ball, and ironically the game away, on the same play late in the fourth quarter.
This loss does hit harder than the usual upset under Herman’s direction. Texas had command of the College Football Playoff picture representing the Big 12, ahead of the Oklahoma schools. Now it could be anyone’s best guess if the Oklahoma State Cowboys can’t take command of the Big 12 once they get out of their bye week for an Oct. 17 road showdown against the Baylor Bears.
Ehlinger has now registered just shy of 1,000 passing yards, 14 passing touchdowns, two interceptions, 130 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, and a 173.2 passer efficiency rating. This was certainly the worst week of the season to date in terms of efficiency for Ehlinger, in Texas’ loss to TCU.
