Texas football came up with an inevitable happening of not being able to hang on by letting an underdog hang around for way too long yet again this weekend.

The third game of the 2020 season did not go the way that fans of the Texas football program likely envisioned. As a double-digit point favorite over head coach Gary Patterson and the TCU Horned Frogs for a Oct. 3 showdown at home at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, Texas wasn’t able to stave off the upset. Texas was very close to staying undefeated both in Big 12 play and as a whole over the weekend, but head coach Tom Herman saw his team fall heartbreakingly short.

TCU upended Texas in the Longhorns Big 12 home opener by the final score of 33-31. The Longhorns loss to the Horned Frogs was essentially sealed when junior running back Keaontay Ingram fumbled inside the two-yard line with less than three minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Getting a touchdown on that drive would’ve forced redshirt sophomore quarterback Max Duggan and the Horned Frogs to have a comeback drive of their own within the last two minutes of the game.

Instead the Longhorns weren’t able to recover the fumble and the TCU offense was able to run out the clock with a safety in the final seconds. If not for that last second safety when Duggan chose to run out of the end zone, Texas would’ve lost by a score of 33-29.

Texas moved to a record of 2-1 (1-1 Big 12) after falling short to TCU over the weekend. And it won’t get much easier from here on out. Texas gets a motivated Oklahoma Sooners team in the annual Red River Rivalry game in Dallas next weekend.

Here’s a look into the three overreactions from the Longhorns two-point loss at the hands of the Horned Frogs from Oct. 3 in the Big 12 home opener.
