3) Why Texas football can win the Big 12: Sam Ehlinger is special

Despite the loss to TCU, and about the most inefficient performance on the season to date for senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger, he is still the best at the position this team had in a long time. There’s little to no reason why Longhorns fans should lose a lot of confidence in Ehlinger after falling short to the Horned Frogs last weekend.

While Ehlinger only completed 17-of-36 passing attempts, he did have more than 275 total yards, four passing touchdowns, and one interception. Ehlinger was under pressure frequently and didn’t get a whole lot of help from the skill position players in this game. Texas registered a season-high three drops in this game.

Between that Ingram fumble and a huge drop from sophomore wide receiver Jake Smith, when he had a ton of open field to run after a crossing route, the mistakes really added up in a very costly way for the Longhorns skill position players. Texas has to get better play out of their top running backs and wide receivers from here on out to stay in contention for the Big 12.

Through three games this season, Ehlinger now has registered 924 passing yards, 14 passing touchdowns, two interceptions, 130 rushing yards, and one rushing score. He’s still posting the best passer efficiency rating of his career, and he’s on pace to have the best number of total yards and total touchdowns per game of his career to date.

That should be reason enough for the Longhorns to hold out hope that they could still contend to win a Big 12 Title this fall.
