2) Texas football QB’s who dominated OU: Colt McCoy

A much less surprising name on this list than Gardere, in terms of performance in the Red River Rivalry game in his career, is the former Longhorn legend Colt McCoy. As part of a stellar string of quarterbacks in the mid-to-late 2000’s with the Longhorns, McCoy usually put his best foot forward against Oklahoma.

And unlike Gardere, McCoy was usually really impressive statistically against the Sooners too. In his career against Oklahoma, McCoy held a 3-1 record and put up some great individual numbers. He registered a 66.9 completion percentage, nearly 900 total yards, six passing touchdowns, and just two interceptions.

A few of the outings for McCoy against the Sooners didn’t need him to do all that much. Hence why he had just six touchdowns in his career in Red River. But he also mostly played mistake free football against Oklahoma, with just two picks, and a good completion percentage.

The best individual performance for McCoy against the Sooners came in 2008 where he registered an 80 completion percentage, more than 300 total yards, one passing touchdown, and no picks. He never really had a flashy stat line against the Sooners, but that 2008 outing against Oklahoma shows how efficient he could be when called upon.

In that 2008 win in Red River, McCoy the No. 5 ranked Longhorns over the No. 1 ranked Sooners by the final score of 45-35 in a classic rivalry game for this program.
