Fomer Texas football WR Jordan Pouncey granted immediately eligibility at UF
Texas football lost junior wide receiver Jordan Pouncey to the transfer portal last offseason, and he’s eligible immediately to play for Florida this fall.
The NCAA Transfer Portal has hit the depth of the Texas football program pretty hard in recent years. But the transfer portal is also a two-way street that can help and hurt Texas head coach Tom Herman and his team.
One recent loss to the transfer portal for the Longhorns from last offseason came in the form of former three-star recruit and junior wide receiver Jordan Pouncey. He wound up joining his brother, and four-star cornerback recruit Ethan Pouncey, by committing to head coach Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators in the SEC East.
According to a report from Gators Territory (part of the Rivals network), the former Texas wide receiver Pouncey had his immediate eligibility waiver approved by the NCAA this week. He should be ready to play for the Gators as soon as next weekend.
Pouncey is part of a duo of wide receivers that Florida landed out of the transfer portal last offseason. They also brought in former Penn State Nittany Lions wide receiver and ex-five-star recruit Justin Shorter into the mix.
What Florida is getting out of former Texas football WR Jordan Pouncey
Last year, Pouncey only got action in two games, where he caught two passes for 19 receiving yards (9.5 yards per catch) and no touchdowns. He had one catch each in wins over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Rice Owls in the non-conference slate for the Longhorns last season.
Pouncey was a three-star recruit hailing out of the Winter Park High School football program in Winter Park, FL. He was one of the more unheralded signees in the Longhorns 2017 recruiting class. He ranked as the nation’s No. 735 2017 high school prospect, No. 106 wide receiver, and No. 97 prospect out of Florida (247Sports Composite).
The offer sheet was really impressive for Pouncey considering he was a three-star recruit that ranked outside of the top 700 high school prospects in the nation for the 2017 recruiting cycle. He held nearly 50 schools on his lengthy offer sheet. The highlighting schools on his offer sheet (outside of those already mentioned) included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Tennessee Volunteers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Miami Hurricanes, Auburn Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan State Spartans, and North Carolina Tar Heels, among others.
The 6-foot-1 and 215 pound Pouncey showed reliable hands and route running ability in his high school football days and from what Texas fans saw out of him in spring camp, spring football games, and brief stints in game action. He might not be the biggest threat in that Gators receiving corps, but he could surely provide some valuable contributions as soon as this fall.
Florida is currently 2-0 (2-0 SEC) and owns a top five ranking in both major polls. Pouncey will have star quarterback Kyle Trask looking his way if he gets some game action this season. Meanwhile, Texas holds a record of 2-1 (1-1 Big 12) heading into the annual Red River Rivalry game against the Oklahoma Sooners on Oct. 10.
