The annual Red River Rivalry game is set for a morning kick off on Oct. 10 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Which Longhorns could breakthrough in this game?

There needs to be more players stepping up for the Texas football program in Week 6 of the 2020 college football season. Up next for Texas head coach Tom Herman is a matchup with the unranked and underachieving Oklahoma Sooners in the annual Red River Rivalry game at the original Cotton Bowl at the Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas.

While Red River is still set to take place at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas this year, it will be in a very different mood in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic. And both Texas and Oklahoma are coming in with a very low amount of momentum. The crowds will be limited as is the success in the win column for each of these teams.

Texas comes into this game with a record of 2-1 (1-1 Big 12) after falling short at the hands of the TCU Horned Frogs at home last weekend. That loss to TCU came by the final score of 33-31. A late-game fumble from junior running back Keaontay Ingram ultimately cost the Longhorns over the weekend. TCU redshirt sophomore quarterback Max Duggan took an intentional safety to run the clock out and give his team the two point win.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma comes into Red River with a record of 1-2 (0-2 Big 12). It’s hard to believe in this day and age that head coach Lincoln Riley and the Sooners have lost their first two games of the Big 12 slate. The first two losses of the season for Oklahoma came to the Kansas State Wildcats and Iowa State Cyclones.

It would seem that Texas has a huge opportunity to bounce back in the Big 12 in Red River next weekend, but it won’t come easy. Here’s a look into three Longhorns players to watch that could breakout in Red River.
