2) Why Texas football upsets OU: Added skill position weapons

Heading into last weekend’s matchup against TCU in their Big 12 home opener, the Longhorns were still trying to get a lot of their skill position players healthier and in rhythm. Texas was missing sophomore slot wide receiver Jake Smith for the first two games of the season, and he made his 2020 debut in the loss to TCU.

It was clear that Smith was still shaking off a lot of rust. He did register 49 receiving yards and one touchdown on six catches. But he also had one key drop and an offensive pass interference called at a critical time against him (although the flag was controversial like a number of them against TCU). Hopefully he’s ready to breakthrough in Red River this weekend.

We should also see redshirt freshman wide receiver and former five-star recruit Jordan Whittington return to the lineup this weekend after recovering from a small meniscus tear he suffered in the win over the UTEP Miners back on Sep. 12. Whittington does not have much game experience under his belt up to this point, but hopefully this weekend will be a time for him to breakthrough finally.

And another wide receiver to watch in this game that will hopefully be healthier this weekend is redshirt sophomore Joshua Moore. In his return to the team in the first two games of the season, Moore was fantastic. He missed pretty much all of the game last weekend against TCU, but a contusion shouldn’t keep him out of Red River.
