1) Why Texas football upsets OU: Sam Ehlinger’s efficiency

Although he had about his worst outing of the season to date in the loss to TCU, senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger is still putting together a really impressive stat line this fall. The Texas offense as a whole is on a good pace in terms of numbers, but the timing just isn’t showing up when it needs to the most. Texas is averaging more than 51.0 points per game through three outings.

Maybe this is just a settling in period for new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, but the Texas offense really needs to find its rhythm at key points of the game. Texas started falling behind in the second half at weird times against both TCU and Texas Tech, which is not a good sign of what’s to come if that trend doesn’t turnaround fast.

Ehlinger himself registered a 63.3 completion percentage, 924 passing yards, 14 passing touchdowns, two interceptions, 130 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, 10.2 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 173.2 passer efficiency rating. While those numbers are still really solid, Ehlinger needs to bounce back after his stats got increasingly worse over the course of the last two games.

Rattler already has twice as many interceptions as Ehlinger through three games. The good news for the Longhorns is that Sam has at least avoided timely turnovers this fall. The fumble from the TCU game was to no fault of his own. He will really need to keep managing turnovers effectively to have a chance to beat Oklahoma this weekend.
