A next target could be in mind for head coach Tom Herman and his 2021 Texas football recruiting class just after yesterday’s massive decommitment.

Since the 2021 Texas football recruiting class was just dealt a massive blow in the form of a decommitment from the elite four-star Denton-Ryan athlete Billy Bowman Jr., they need to find answers elsewhere. And a place where not only Texas head coach Tom Herman, but a number of programs, are turning to find answers right now is with the former Kansas Jayhawks commit and four-star Opelousas Catholic School wide receiver Keon Coleman.

The decommitment from Bowman Jr. arrived for the Longhorns on the evening of Oct. 7, and dropped them a few spots in the national class rankings in effect. Bowman Jr. was by far the second-highest rated commit in the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class, and was the closest thing they had to a second five-star commit behind five-star Denton-Ryan athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders.

But now that Texas has sent out a scholarship offer to the 6-foot-4 and 200 pound Louisiana native Coleman, it appears that the coaching staff has their next set of targets in line. Coleman was committed to head coach Les Miles and the Jayhawks until Oct. 6. Since he decommitted from Kansas, Coleman has already received a trio of Power Five offers.

The other two offers he received this week outside of that from the Longhorns were from the TCU Horned Frogs and USC Trojans. He now has more than 40 schools on his lengthy offer sheet in total, as of the afternoon of Oct. 8.

The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Auburn Tigers, Baylor Bears, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, Miami Hurricanes, Michigan State Spartans, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Penn State Nittany Lions, Ole Miss Rebels, South Carolina Gamecocks, Virginia Cavaliers, and Texas A&M Aggies. The bulk of the offers he’s received have come out of the Big 12 or SEC.

Coleman ranks as the nation’s No. 259 2021 high school prospect, No. 44 wide receiver, and No. 9 prospect out of Louisiana (247Sports Composite). But the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 115 high school prospect, No. 14 wide receiver, and No. 5 prospect out of Louisiana. He could be a nice find if Texas is able to gain some real traction with him in the near future.

Moreover, the scholarship offer that Coleman received from Texas came on Oct. 8, the same day as the one he got from head coach Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs. Texas will really have to prioritize winning over the interests of Coleman in the near future, but it’s nice to see them trying to get back on track for their 2021 class so fast after losing the commitment of Bowman Jr.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 17 in the nation and remains in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. After the decommitment of Bowman Jr., they now hold 17 commits in their 2021 class.
