An absolutely pivotal game for Texas football head coach Tom Herman to get right remains on tap for Oct. 10 in the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma.

If the Texas football program can knock off the Oklahoma Sooners in the annual Red River Rivalry game on Oct. 10, then head coach Tom Herman can officially get back on track to the point of getting back into College Football Playoff and Big 12 Title contention this year. Heading into Red River, both Texas and Oklahoma are slipping in a major way.

Texas and Oklahoma come into this game with a combined record in Big 12 play of 1-3. Last weekend, Texas fell short against head coach Gary Patterson and the stingy TCU Horned Frogs, by the heartbreaking final score of 33-31. Junior running back Keaontay Ingram fumbled the game away on the Longhorns de factor final meaningful drive of the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma is coming off a loss to the Iowa State Cyclones in their Big 12 road opener in Ames last weekend. Oklahoma can’t seem to keep redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler from turning the ball over when it matters most.

Entering this game, Texas is an underdog by about a field goal to Oklahoma. But the ESPN Football Power Index does give them a 67 percent chance to beat head coach Lincoln Riley and the Sooners at the Cotton Bowl at the Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas, with kick off set for the morning of Oct. 10.

Here’s a look at the live stream, kick off time, pick for the game, and more as Texas takes on Oklahoma in Red River on Oct. 10.

Injured Texas football players

Texas is set to miss a few players in this game, per Herman’s press conference and updates earlier this week. A notable injury that will hurt the depth in the defensive backfield is thanks to a hamstring strain and some knee pain with sophomore safety Tyler Owens. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Ayodele Adeoye is also set to miss Red River with an upper-body injury.

Adeoye has played in just two games this season, making a minimal impact in those appearances.

More significant injury news came with the potential return to the lineup of redshirt freshman wide receiver Jordan Whittington. This looks to be the first time that Whittington returns to the lineup since the season opening win over the UTEP Miners.

Picking Texas football vs. Oklahoma

Texas is somehow favored in this game against Oklahoma in the ESPN FPI, but this is a really difficult one to figure out. Oklahoma rarely loses this many games in an entire Big 12 slate, let alone their first two of the conference schedule. It seems like both teams are going to be very desperate to pull out the win.

Expect Rattler and senior Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger to go back and forth all game long. This seems like one where the turnover problems are mopped up a bit. Rattler and the Sooners do finally get over the hump, though, and top the Longhorns to get back on track.

Final score prediction: Oklahoma 39, Texas 34
