Texas Football: 3 overreactions from agonizing loss to OU
2) Overreactions from Texas football’s loss to OU: New generation of playmakers
If there was one point that flew under-the-radar over the course of the last three weeks that is important to note moving forward, it’s that there is a new generation of skill position players that need to be getting more work for the Longhorns. The two Longhorns players that stick out in this regard and two former five-star recruits: freshman running back Bijan Robinson and redshirt freshman wide receiver Jordan Whittington.
Robinson was good for the Longhorns over the weekend. He registered more than 50 total yards from scrimmage on seven total touches. Robinson registered the best rushing grade in this game among all Texas running backs, and the best overall outside of Ehlinger. He also improved his pass blocking grade, and had a team-high (among running backs) 20 yards after contact.
On the season to date now, Robinson has played in three games and registered 67 rushing yards on 14 carries (4.8 yards per carry), and no rushing touchdowns. And he has 59 receiving yards on five catches (11.8 yards per catch), with no receiving touchdowns.
Moreover, Whittington made his return to the receiving corps this weekend. He was one of the most efficient skill position players in this game for the Longhorns. Whittington registered 65 receiving yards on 10 catches, with no touchdowns. He now has 125 total yards from scrimmage and no scores through about a game and a half played this fall.
Whittington didn’t have any drops in this loss to Oklahoma, and registered the second-best receiving grade among all Longhorns. Both he and Robinson should be getting more touches from here on out.
