Texas Basketball: 4 players that will breakout in 2020-21 season
1) Who could breakout for Texas basketball: Donovan Williams
Another obvious addition to the list that was a very highly touted recruit coming out of high school when he signed with the Longhorns is the Houston, TX, native and Fort Bend Elkins High School product Donovan Williams. This lengthy 6-foot-6 and 185 pound shooting guard/wing and rising sophomore Williams is going to have a difficult road ahead during the 2020-21 season.
To get more playing time next season than he did during his true freshman campaign, the former top 75 ranked 2019 high school prospect in the nation will really have to elevate his game. Williams played in 26 games during his freshman campaign last season (only one of which he started in).
Williams averaged 3.3 points per game, 1.0 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.2 blocks. And he shot 36.8 percent from the field, 24.4 percent from beyond the arc, and 70.6 percent from the free-throw line. There were signs last season that Williams could become a really good shooter down the line for the Longhorns, and a very lethal wing in transition on both ends of the floor.
A few other positives for Williams included his defensive ability (3.1 defensive box plus/minus rating, and 0.5 defensive win shares), his steal rate (2.8 percent), and some valuable contributions in wins. He shot around 15.0 percent better from the field, averaged more than three more rebounds per game, and more than four more points per game in wins for Texas compared to losses last season.
Barttorvik projects Williams to average 3.2 points per game, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.3 assists, during the 2020-21 season.
