Which three defensive backs in the transfer portal could potentially replace the departed Texas football CB Kenyatta Watson II?

By far the most notable loss to the NCAA Transfer Portal this year for the Texas football program, in the midst of the 2020 regular season, came with the former four-star cornerback recruit and redshirt freshman Kenyatta Watson II leaving the team. Watson II wound up leaving the Texas program and landed closer to home, committing to play for head coach Geoff Collins and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

It appeared that Georgia Tech was among the front runners to land Watson II out of the transfer portal along with the likes of the Tennessee Volunteers, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and Georgia Bulldogs. There was a connection linking Watson II back with current Mississippi State cornerbacks coach and former Texas assistant Jason Washington.

When he was coming out of Grayson High School in Loganville, GA, as a four-star CB recruit, Washington was the main Texas assistant coach going after his commitment. That relationship was there, but the Georgia native Watson II wound up taking his talents back closer to home anyway and joined up with the Georgia Tech football program.

Coming out of high school, Watson II ranked as the nation’s No. 131 2019 high school prospect, No. 16 cornerback, and No. 16 prospect out of Georgia (247Sports Composite). He was the most highly touted cornerback signee in the Longhorns 2019 recruiting class, and this is definitely a big loss for head coach Tom Herman, along with recently hired defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash and cornerbacks coach Jay Valai.

Watson II appeared to be one of the more promising defensive backs that could usher in the new scheme implemented by Ash over the long haul. But he’ll now be taking his talents from the Big 12 to join up with an ACC program.

If the Longhorns want to turn to the transfer portal to replace the loss of Watson II in the secondary, where could they look? Here’s a deeper dive into three options that stick out in this regard.
