4) Most disappointing Texas football players: Cade Brewer

It appears that recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and Herman have moved beyond giving most of the snaps on passing plays to senior tight end Cade Brewer. The bulk of the snaps on a lot of the key downs on offense now for the Longhorns are going to the towering 6-foot-7 and 255 pound sophomore tight end and former three-star recruit Jared Wiley.

On the season to date, Wiley has registered four catches for 77 receiving yards, and one of the better blocking grades on the team among the skill position players. Wiley was even Texas’ leading receiver (in terms of yards) in the loss to TCU two weeks ago. Meanwhile, the workload for Brewer steadily declined since the season opening win over the UTEP Miners back on Sep. 12.

The 6-foot-4 and 250 pound Brewer has now registered five catches for 52 receiving yards and one touchdown catch on the season to date. But most of his production came in the first game and a half of the season. He went from three targets in the passing game each in the first two games of the year, to one in each of the last two.

Brewer also had a costly penalty in the loss to TCU, and posted his two worst run blocking grades of the year so far in the win over Texas Tech and loss in Red River. If Wiley is going to step up and assume the starting tight end role for the Longhorns in multiple different looks for this offense, then this team doesn’t really need Brewer to step up. But it wouldn’t hurt to have a senior leader rise to the occasion.
