Texas Football: Massive buyout details released for Tom Herman
Texas football head coach Tom Herman has a sizable buyout this year, but it’s not too big for this program if he doesn’t elevate the results on the field.
On Oct. 14, the salaries and quite a few contract details college football head coaches were released. And one of the most noteworthy aspects of that list of contracts and salaries for college football head coaches in 2020, thanks to USA Today, came with the fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman.
Sitting on one of the hottest seats in the entire country right now, a big part of the decision for the Longhorns of what to do with Herman at this point of the size of his buyout. And now the public knows what the price tag would be for that Herman buyout if the Longhorns were to part ways with him before the end of the 2020 season.
The Herman buyout is set at $15,416,667 if the school was to part ways with him prior to Dec. 1, 2020. While that is not even close to the biggest dollar amount for the price tag of any buyout of FBS head coaches, it is still quite large. The largest buyout belongs to the Texas A&M Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher (just north of $53 million this year).
Moreover, the current salary of Herman is around $5.8 million, after around a $125,000 earnings reduction for the year in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The scheduled pay for Herman was set at exactly $6 million for 2020.
The “total pandemic reduction” for Herman this year between his salary and the price tag of his buyout is just north of $500,000. And he is currently the 11th highest paid head coach in the country in terms of actual school pay. He ranks second in the Big 12, behind Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley ($6.2 million), in terms of actual school play this year.
Herman also has the fourth largest buyout of any Big 12 head coach this year. The price tag of his buyout is only smaller than that of Riley ($31 million), Iowa State Cyclones head coach Matt Campbell ($20.3 million), and Kansas State Wildcats head coach Chris Klieman ($17.6 million).
Herman and the Longhorns are currently heading into a bye week after falling short of the Oklahoma Sooners on Oct. 10 in the Red River Rivalry game, by the final score of 53-45 in four overtimes. Texas holds a record of 2-2 (1-2 Big 12) after the loss to Oklahoma, with their next game coming at home on Oct. 24 against the Baylor Bears.
