Former Ohio State and Florida head coach Urban Meyer is the top candidate to replace Tom Herman in the minds of a lot of Texas football fans.

It is that time for the Texas football program where all needs to come together or else it could be near the end of the road for fourth-year head coach Tom Herman. Entering their first bye week in the midst of the Big 12 slate, Texas and Herman have plenty of work to do to get this thing back on track entering the Oct. 24 home showdown against head coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears.

Texas currently holds a record of 2-2 (1-2 Big 12) after losing to the Oklahoma Sooners in the annual Red River Rivalry game last weekend. Herman and the Longhorns fell short to head coach Lincoln Riley and the Sooners by the final score of 53-45 in four overtimes, after yet another furious comeback late in the fourth quarter.

The other loss on the season so far for the Longhorns came at the hands of the TCU Horned Frogs, back on Oct. 3 in their Big 12 home opener, by the final score of 33-31. But even the sole win for Texas in Big 12 play was by a razor thin margin, by the final score of 63-56 in overtime in their conference opener over the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

And the other win on the season for the Longhorns so far came over the UTEP Miners, by the dominant final score of 59-3, in the season opener at home back on Sep. 12.

But with the mounting pressure coming onto Herman’s shoulders, a lot of Longhorns fans are asking the question of who could replacing him. And the name that is most often mentioned on social media, and even in a lot of the general college football media at this point, is the former Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer.

On this week’s episode of “The Flagship” podcast on Horns247 (part of the 247Sports network), both parts of the Texas and Ohio State crew on the site will discuss the potential of Meyer trying to turnaround the Longhorns. This episode has yet to release this week, but here’s some of what will be ahead with the Ohio State and Texas writers/podcasters discussing the subject of Meyer hypothetically trying to turnaround the Longhorns.

"On this week’s interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, long-time Ohio State beat reporter Bruce Hooley joins the show for an in-depth look at all Meyer has to offer as a head coach if the time were to come for the Longhorns to make a coaching change. After covering Meyer extensively during his time in Columbus, Hooley delivers the good, bad and ugly about the former Buckeyes’ head coach, including how Meyer’s burning desire to win has led to him finding success at major universities as a head coach and why he believes Meyer’s will-to-win could turn around the Texas football program."

Herman now holds a record of 27-12 in his four years as Texas head coach. He’s got one double-digit win season, and holds an undefeated record with the Longhorns in three bowl games. But Herman is off to a really shaky start this fall.

Meanwhile, Meyer is a three-time National Champion (one with Ohio State and two with Florida) that ended his last coaching stop following the 2018 season. Meyer has a career FBS coaching record of 187-32-0 between four stops with the Bowling Green Falcons, Utah Utes, Florida, and then Ohio State.

There’s not much better that Texas could do than hiring Meyer this year. But Herman is likely to see out at least a few weeks, depending on how Texas looks out of the bye. To round out the month, Texas faces Baylor on Oct. 24 and then the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Oct. 31.
