A 3-Star OT offer from the 2021 Texas football recruiting class just gave an impactful commitment to the Big 12 foe Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Although this is not necessarily too bad of, or too surprising, news for head coach Tom Herman and his 2021 Texas football recruiting class, it is notable where one of their-state offers just committed to. On the evening of Oct. 15, the underrated but skilled 6-foot-6 and 320 pound Mansfield Summit offensive tackle Jacoby Jackson gave his commitment to the Big 12 foe Texas Tech Red Raiders over offers from a whopping 40 other schools.

Where Texas and Texas Tech are largely in the same boat is that each has struggled on the recruiting trail of late. Most of the news on the recruiting trail lately for the Longhorns 2021 class involved either missing on key targets or very impactful decommitments. The latest big news headline for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail was losing the commitment of their second highest rated prospect in the 2021 class earlier this month, four-star Denton-Ryan athlete Billy Bowman Jr.

Just a hair away from earning that highly coveted fifth star, Bowman Jr. was a huge part of the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class. And what makes matters worse about losing the commitment of Bowman Jr. is the fact that he is currently trending to land with the rival Oklahoma Sooners and head coach Lincoln Riley.

Meanwhile, Jackson committing to the Red Raiders give head coach Matt Wells just his 10th prospect in his 2021 recruiting class. Just now getting up to a double-digit number of commitments this late in the recruiting cycle is tough. But it is good for Texas Tech that they got an under-the-radar boost in the trenches a couple of months ahead of the Early Signing Period.

This sizable offensive lineman hailing out of Arlington, TX, announced his commitment to Texas Tech on his Twitter timeline on Thursday evening. He wound up picking Texas Tech over offers from the likes of the Baylor Bears, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas, Florida State Seminoles, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Ole Miss Rebels, SMU Mustangs, and Utah Utes.

It appeared that his commitment decision narrowed down to three finalists out of the Big 12: TCU, Baylor, and Texas Tech.

Jackson ranks as the nation’s No. 1,071 2021 high school prospect, No. 92 offensive tackle, and No. 163 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 80 offensive tackle and No. 150 prospect out of Texas.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas Tech recruiting class is up to No. 76 in the nation and sits in the ninth spot in the Big 12, just ahead of TCU. Texas Tech holds two four-star commits in their 2021 recruiting class, with the highest rated being promising four-star Eastland pro-style quarterback Behren Morton.

Meanwhile, the Longhorns hold steady at No. 17 in the national class rankings, and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. They have 17 commits in their 2021 class after the decommitment of Bowman Jr. back on Oct. 7.
