4) Texas football blue chips that Herman didn’t develop: JP Urquidez

It was a long and winding road for the current Texas State Bobcats senior offensive tackle and former four-star recruit JP Urquidez. This talented 6-foot-6 and 300 pound offensive lineman was one of the more highly touted four-star offensive linemen that signed with the Longhorns 2016 recruiting class.

He ranked as the nation’s No. 236 2016 high school prospect, No. 22 offensive tackle, and No. 36 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).

As the lone former Longhorns commit on this list that was not originally part of a recruiting class that was signed under Herman’s direction, Urquidez can’t be fully blamed on the current Texas head coach. But that doesn’t takeaway from the fact that neither Strong nor Herman could find a way to really utilize the talent that Urquidez brought to the table at any point of his college career.

After a few years on the Forty Acres, Urquidez wound up putting his name in the transfer portal last offseason. While it seemed like there was a plethora of landing spots that Urquidez could potentially commit to, he wound up taking his talents to San Marcos. But it also wouldn’t be long before Urquidez would opt out of the remainder of the 2020 season for personal reasons.

Urquidez didn’t take a single snap at Texas State and took only a few dozens snaps between the offensive line and special teams over the course of three years playing for Texas. He didn’t really register snaps in much meaningful game action. It just didn’t work out well between Urquidez and the Longhorns.
