1) Texas football blue chips that Herman didn’t develop: Toneil Carter

The running back duo of Toneil Carter and Daniel Young was never really given the chance to live up to the billing and momentum that they built up near the end of the 2017 season. By far the two most efficient and promising running backs for Herman and the Longhorns during his first year at the helm, in 2017, were Carter and Young.

The sizable 6-foot and 205 pound rusher Carter was one of the more highly rated Longhorns running back recruits that signed with their 2017 class. He and Young were both crucial parts of that class that provided immediate contributions that fall. But they wouldn’t make much of an impact stemming beyond their true freshman seasons.

Carter registered just over 280 total yards from scrimmage (more than 250 of which were rushing), four total touchdowns, and 4.8 yards per carry. Carter also posted one of the best rushing and pass blocking grades of any running back on the roster for both the 2017 and 2018 seasons for the Longhorns.

Coming out of Langham Creek High School in Houston, TX, Carter ranked as the nation’s No. 162 2017 high school prospect, No. 10 running back, and No. 26 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).

After just one year playing for Texas, Carter wound up putting his name in the transfer portal and landed with FCS Sam Houston State. But he only played in one season for Sam Houston State after transferring.
