Texas Football: 3 players that improved the most under Tom Herman
2) Texas football players that improved most under Herman: Sam Ehlinger
As the easiest and most obvious choice on this list as far as improved Longhorns players go under Herman’s direction, senior star quarterback and former four-star recruit Sam Ehlinger is still not done yet on the Forty Acres. Although he’s not getting the help he needs from his teammates through four games this season, Ehlinger is still putting together another record-breaking campaign statistically. He leads the FBS currently in total touchdowns, and leads the Big 12 in total yards and passing touchdowns.
Moreover, Ehlinger was a pretty highly touted prospect in the Longhorns 2017 recruiting class, coming out of Westlake High School in Austin, TX. He ranked as the nation’s No. 119 2018 high school prospect, No. 4 dual-threat quarterback, and No. 19 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). Ehlinger was one of the mostly highly rated signees in the Longhorns 2017 class.
Ehlinger has continuously progressed his game to the point we’ve reached now. Through four games this season, he’s registered 1,211 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, four interceptions, 242 rushing yards, and five rushing scores.
Through his four years playing for Texas to date, Ehlinger registered just shy of 1,800 rushing yards, 30 rushing touchdowns, 62.9 completion percentage, just over 10,000 passing yards, 84 passing touchdowns, 26 interceptions, 8.0 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 144.4 passer efficiency rating.
The passing grade for Ehlinger this season does leave something to be desired, but his overall offensive grade is doing pretty well. And his rushing grade is also sitting at a career best mark in 2020.
