Texas Football: Ehlinger still looking for first career TD vs. Baylor

Senior Texas football star quarterback Sam Ehlinger is on a good pace this season, but Baylor has remained a hurtle for him in multiple ways.

It is amazing that senior star Texas football quarterback Sam Ehlinger has yet to get a single touchdown in his career to date against the Baylor Bears. Granted Ehlinger has made just one complete start in his three years where Texas faced Baylor in the regular season so far. That one start came last season, when Baylor was at their peak under former head coach Matt Rhule.

The year before, Ehlinger suffered a shoulder sprain in an eventual win over Baylor at home. Former Texas quarterback Shane Buechele helped to round out the wins over Baylor and the Iowa State Cyclones during the 2018 season for the Longhorns in place of the injured Ehlinger.

During his true freshman campaign, Ehlinger missed the meeting with Baylor with a concussion. In his place, Buechele got the start and the win over a struggling and rebuilding Baylor team at the time. Last season was the first time where any ailment didn’t get in Ehlinger’s way of making a complete start against Baylor.

But that game also didn’t go as planned for Ehlinger and the Longhorns as they fell short of the Bears by the final score of 24-10 in Waco. Last year, that win over Texas propelled Baylor into the Big 12 Championship Game, where they would eventually fall short to the Oklahoma Sooners. Then, it was Baylor’s turn to try and knock off the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl. But they couldn’t do what the Longhorns did to cap the 2018 season, and beat Georgia.

In his career to date against Baylor, Ehlinger registered a 61.9 completion percentage, 235 passing yards, no passing touchdowns, one interception, 84 rushing yards, and no rushing touchdowns. The lowest passer efficiency rating that Ehlinger has of any opponent in his career is against Baylor, just north of 105.0. And his lowest passing and offensive grade in any game last season came in the loss to Baylor.

Ehlinger will be seeking his first career touchdown against Baylor this weekend. The next lowest total of touchdowns that Ehlinger has in his career against any other Big 12 opponent is Iowa State, with five.

Texas and Baylor are set to kick off on the afternoon of Oct. 24 at DKR, at 2:30 p.m. CT. The Longhorns are more than a one possession favorite over Baylor, and the over/under is set at 61.5 points.
