2021 Texas football DL target down to Longhorns, Baylor for commitment
An emerging target of the 2021 Texas football recruiting class, 3-Star DT Ikechukwu Iwunnah, appears to be down to two schools now.
Another underrated target of the 2021 Texas football recruiting class hit center stage this week. While fourth-year Texas head coach Tom Herman is getting his team set to face head coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears on the field out of the bye week, for this coming weekend, his staff is also trying to beat out the same team on the recruiting trail.
This aforementioned key target that is hitting center stage for the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class is the unheralded three-star Lakeview Centennial sizable 6-foot-4 and 275 pound defensive tackle Ikechukwu Iwunnah. There are reportedly (247Sports paid content) just two schools left in contention to land the commitment of Iwunnah, as of the morning of Oct. 22.
The underrated defensive lineman hailing out of Garland, TX, (a teammate of the elite five-star running back prospect Camar Wheaton) received his latest scholarship offer from Texas back on May 24, 2020. Iwunnah has just under a dozen schools on his offer sheet. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Boise State Broncos, Baylor, Colorado Buffaloes, Boston College Eagles, Kansas Jayhawks, Mizzou Tigers, Washington State Cougars, and Wyoming Cowboys.
Just over half of the schools on Iwunnah’s offer sheet are from Power Five schools, with Texas as about the only blue blood on the list. The rest came from Group of Five schools, mostly around the state of Texas and out of the Mountain West Conference.
But it appears that the two schools that Iwunnah is reportedly down to are Texas and Baylor. After Iwunnah from the Texas coaching staff is the recently hired defensive line coach Mark Hagen. Since Texas doesn’t have a true defensive tackle commit in their 2021 class, trying to nab a pledge from Iwunnah does make a lot of sense.
Iwunnah ranks as the nation’s No. 1,020 2021 high school prospect, No. 54 defensive tackle, and No. 148 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 39 defensive tackle and No. 94 prospect out of Texas.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 17 in the nation and remains in second place in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. They hold 17 commits in their 2021 class, with the highest rated being the elite five-star Denton-Ryan athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders.
