The 2023 Texas football recruiting class is getting their early sights set on the rising star talent at wide receiver with DeSoto’s Johntay Cook.

As wear near kick off for the Longhorns against head coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears this weekend, on Oct. 24 at home at 2:30 p.m. CT, there’s some action heating up on the recruiting trail too. This won’t just be a battle on the gridiron in the near future between these two teams, the 2021 Texas football recruiting class is after an under-the-radar three-star defensive tackle prospect that has them and Baylor as his finalist schools.

Another key target that received his scholarship offer from Texas heading into the weekend was the talented 2023 6-foot and 170 pound DeSoto wide receiver Johntay Cook. This unranked (just due to it being so early in the 2023 recruiting cycle) prospect hailing out of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex officially received his Texas scholarship offer on Oct. 22.

The receiving of the Texas offer was announced by Cook on his Twitter timeline on the evening of Oct. 22.

Moreover, Cook is really starting to gain a lot of steam in terms of national recruiting attention and the offers increasing of late. He’s now into the double digits in terms of schools on his offer sheet, as of the afternoon of Oct. 23.

The highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Arkansas Razorbacks, Auburn Tigers, Baylor, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and Texas A&M Aggies. And he’s sure to pick up more offers in the very near future.

And in a recent interview with Horns247 (paid content), Cook mentioned that this was a “dream offer” to come his way from the Longhorns. He also stated that “Texas was always one of my favorite schools” in this piece on Horns247.

Texas has yet to land their first 2023 commit. But that’s not all that surprising given that there are only six FBS schools that even have one commit in their 2023 recruiting class at the moment. And none of those six schools are from the Big 12.

Texas has now sent out four offers to 2023 wide receiver prospects. They’ve sent out two dozen scholarship offers overall to high school prospects in the 2023 recruiting class. This could be a special class for the Longhorns to build off the early success in the 2022 class.
