Texas football got a decisive win over the Baylor Bears on Oct. 24, by a double-digit margin, and earned more votes in the Coaches Poll for Week 9.

There’s a huge looming opportunity for the Texas football program to gain some headway to climbing back to the top of the Big 12 standings if they can build a two-game winning streak next weekend. Fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and his Texas squad take on the undefeated and No. 6 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys next weekend on the road in Stillwater.

That showdown between Herman and the Longhorns and longtime head coach Mike Gundy and the Pokes will come in the mid-afternoon slate on Halloween day (Oct. 31) at Boone Pickens Stadium. Texas comes into that game with a record of 3-2 (2-2 Big 12), after knocking off first-year head coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears at home in a double-digit victory over the weekend.

The Oct. 24 win over Baylor at home, by the final score of 27-16, could be a statement for the Longhorns and hopefully a turning point after a rough start to the Big 12 schedule. Texas started off Big 12 play by narrowly defeating the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road in overtime back on Sep. 26, and then falling short to both the TCU Horned Frogs and Oklahoma Sooners.

However, Texas gets Oklahoma State at an opportune time, coming off a much-needed win over Baylor and well-rested coming off the bye week before that. Hopefully this team is pretty healthy coming into the Oklahoma State game too.

With the release of the Week 9 polls around college football, the headway that Texas could soon make is evident. How did the Week 9 Coaches Poll shake out coming out of a key Oct. 24 of college football action?

Texas was outside of the top 25 in the Coaches Poll this week. But they did get more than twice the amount of votes that they held last week. The Longhorns tied the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (who just dominated the South Florida Bulls this week), with 18 votes for each team in Week 9.

The Big 12 teams that slotted inside the Coaches Poll for the top 25 this week included No. 24 Oklahoma, No. 22 Iowa State, No. 16 Kansas State, and No. 6 Oklahoma State. Oklahoma got back into the top 25 of the Coaches Poll after dominating TCU over the weekend. Iowa State slid down after their loss to Oklahoma State, and Kansas State moved up after they dominated the Kansas Jayhawks in their own right.
