Texas Football: 3 best transfer landing spots for LB Byron Vaughns
1) Transfer destinations for Texas football LB Byron Vaughns: North Texas
The dark horse among the schools that offered Vaughns out of high school (where he attended in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex) could lie with head coach Seth Littrell and the North Texas Mean Green out of Conference-USA. As the lone Group of Five school on this list, and one of the few that offered him out of Eastern Hills High School, North Texas could hold a unique footing if they choose to pursue Vaughns out of the transfer portal.
North Texas was just the third school, and the first in-state in Texas, to send a scholarship offer Vaughns’ way. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were the first two to offer Vaughns during his recruitment, but North Texas jumped on it before the likes of the Longhorns, Aggies, Horned Frogs, etc.
Going through some down times in the last year and a half or so, the Mean Green are largely rebuilding after a poor ending to the tenure led by starting quarterback Mason Fine. They could use a nice boost of talent on the defensive side of the ball heading into the 2021 season. North Texas ranked 105th in the FBS last season, giving up more than 32 points per game.
They were also one of the most inefficient run defenses in the FBS, giving up around 190 yards per game and three touchdowns on the ground (4.6 yards per carry). Things have only gotten worse for Littrell and the Mean Green on defense this fall, giving up north of 44.0 points per game (bottom 10 in the FBS). Vaughns could realistically land in Denton with the Mean Green before next offseason even arrives.
