3) Most critical games for Texas basketball in 2020-21

19-12. Jan. 30, 2021. 528. 467. Rupp Arena. 25-6. 2-0, UK. Lexington, KY

The premier matchup it looks like for the Longhorns outside of Big 12 play this coming season is scheduled against legendary head coach John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats. It really feels like the Longhorns draw at least one blue blood non-conference foe per season under the direction of Smart as head coach.

Calipari was looking to take Kentucky to the heights of a one-seed in the NCAA Tournament last season, and contend for a National Championship.

In reality, that is partly true. Texas face the Georgetown Hoyas last season, to the tune of a 82-66 romping in the 2K Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden. And in the two seasons prior, the Longhorns pulled off a huge upset of the North Carolina Tar Heels and then fell short to the Duke Blue Devils.

The next blue blood up for the Longhorns this season was drawn for them in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Texas got the premier matchup out of the SEC for this coming season by landing Kentucky. And what makes this matchup even more difficult is that it will come on the road in the famous Rupp Arena in Lexington.

Texas will really need their senior leaders, like center Jericho Sims and guard Matt Coleman, to come up big when they need them to most.

The last time that Texas faced Kentucky was during the 2014-15 season. At that time, No. 6 Texas was taken down by top-ranked Kentucky by the final score of 63-51. Other than that, the only other matchup in the modern era of college hoops between Texas and Kentucky resulted in a win for the latter of those two teams back in 1993.
