Texas Football: Top 5 Longhorns 2021 NFL Draft prospects at halfway mark
4) Texas football 2021 NFL Draft prospects at halfway mark
All eyes will continue to fall on star senior 6-foot-3 and 225 pound dual-threat quarterback Sam Ehlinger for the rest of the season. For two reasons, Ehlinger will have a lot of pressure and eyeballs falling on him for the remainder of the Longhorns 2020 season.
The first is that he is having another career season statistically, and for the second year in a row, isn’t getting the support he needs for this team to find more success in the win column. Ehlinger leads the FBS in total touchdowns still this season (with 24) and leads all non-running backs in rushing touchdowns (seven).
And the second reason why Ehlinger will continue to have a lot of attention and pressure falling on his shoulders is that he is starting to boost his 2021 NFL Draft stock.
If there’s any senior star quarterback around the country that has a serious possibility of returning for another season in 2021, it could be Ehlinger. Although Ehlinger could find himself as a middle round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft (likely in a best case scenario for him), he truly bleeds burnt orange and returned to the Forty Acres for his senior campaign without skipping a beat.
So far this season, Ehlinger registered 1,481 passing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, five interceptions, 61.6 completion percentage, 8.6 adjusted yards per passing attempt,153.8 passer efficiency rating, 293 rushing yards (4.5 yards per carry), and seven rushing scores. Ehlinger has to continue to improve his accuracy on intermediate and deep passes.
On passing attempts of more than 20 yards this season, Ehlinger has completed just 11-of-40 passes for 385 passing yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. He’s also not doing too great on the outside passes from 11-20 yards down the field.
